Over the summer of 2005 I painted 30 Vanillas. They are all 24" x 24", oil on wood. This was an exhaustive study creating depth on a flat surface using white, which in its nature is very flat. I have learned a great deal more about color and was very happy with the results.

About Heather Rae Pieters' Art

Collectors are drawn to Heather's paintings because of their immediate aesthetic appeal, but there is a weight and presence to this work also, which draws you in unexpectedly. At first glance, the paint appears applied thick and haphazardly, belying Ms. Pieters' fastidious control over this medium. Then, as you linger a moment longer, the complexity of the layers begins to emerge.

The push-and-pull conflict of foreground striking out against background and color competing with texture for your gaze invokes tension in Ms. Pieters' work. In this way, Ms. Pieters' art weighs on you with gradual intensity, simultaneously soothing and yet vibrant.

Through Ms. Pieters' skillful manipulation of color and texture, abstract movements are given form and ubiety. Movements of color, both subtle and bold, weave texture through seemingly infinite layers, lending a sculptural quality to Ms. Pieters' paintings. Her work appears smooth in one moment and intricately scabrous the next. Fields of color egress and then fade, radiate and then vanish, creating energy, movement and depth.
